Calling on Canada to take serious action on Israel Invasion of Jenin
To: The Right Honorable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
Late on July 2, 2023, the Jenin refugee camp witnessed a raid by over 1,000 Israeli occupying forces (IOF), leading to the tragic loss of innocent lives, destruction of homes, and widespread fear among the populace. The refugee camp has been placed under siege, severing access to vital services and exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. Disturbingly, ambulances attempting to rescue the injured have been impeded, while medical personnel and journalists have also become targets.
Given the gravity of the circumstances, it is imperative for the international community, including Canada, to take immediate action. I implore you, as our elected representatives, to earnestly and expeditiously undertake substantial measures to halt this merciless Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.
Canada, known for its leadership in championing human rights within the global community, carries the responsibility of bringing an end to Israel’s aggression against the Palestinian civilian population. It is our fervent plea for the Canadian government to lend its support to the implementation of pertinent UN Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2334 (2016) and 904 (1994), which are paramount in safeguarding the well-being of civilians, particularly children and women.
Furthermore, it is of utmost importance for Canada to translate its longstanding solidarity with the most marginalized individuals on Earth into tangible actions. For instance, supporting the international calls for a prompt investigation by the International Criminal Court (ICC) into the situation in Palestine is a crucial step. Holding all responsible parties accountable for their crimes, including Israeli political and military officials, as well as settlers, is an urgent imperative in preventing further atrocities against Palestinians. We must decisively put an end to this unlawful and deplorable state of affairs. Regrettably, our existing foreign policy approach has proven ineffective and, frankly, has been a disappointing failure. Canada has seemingly forsaken the Palestinians, leaving them at the mercy of Israel’s military forces and settler militias, who perceive the international community’s inaction as a tacit endorsement to commit crimes against humanity. This approach only serves to embolden Israel and fosters a culture of impunity where international law is routinely and flagrantly disregarded, without any repercussions, not even symbolic ones. We implore you to promptly abandon this double standard and ensure immediate protection of Palestinian rights.
As an elected representative, I implore you to undertake or advocate for the following actions:
Immediately summon the Israeli ambassador in Canada and firmly denounce this barbaric invasion.
Release a statement condemning the invasion unequivocally, refraining from
utilizing the right to resistance as a pretext for the illegal invasion and ongoing bloodshed.
Cease all arms trade between Canada and Israel.
Recognize the independent State of Palestine based on the pre-
June 6, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.
Temporarily suspend Canada’s Free-Trade Agreement with Israel.
Demand that Israel immediately cease its violations and provocations, and comply with its obligations under international law and pertinent UN resolutions.
Provide a comprehensive response from Global Affairs Canada and the
Government concerning the decision not to designate Israel as an apartheid state, despite reputable non-governmental organizations making this determination.
